It's Monday: What are you reading?

NOTHING.

And that's why I need your help.  I need your recommendations for medium-to-short, highly readable fictions that are still rich enough in ideas, characterization, and writing style to be worth the time.

Why?  I'm completely overwhelmed right now, but I do crave a great read to take me away from pressing stressors each day.

So, please:  Which of your favorite books fit the bill?

MFB, with gratitude for whatever recommendations you can provide,
L

p.s.  I'm posting this in conjunction with the regular It's Monday:  What are you reading?  blog hop over at Book Journey.  I always enjoy it, and hope you will too.

Here is what I am reading or have just finished:

The Likeness, by Tana French
Eleven Minutes, by Paul Coelho
In the Woods, by Tana French
The Millennium Trilogy, by Stieg Larsson
The Pact, by Jodi Picoult
The Prince of Tides (3rd reading!), by Pat Conroy

These are of course adult fiction but great reads.

Hi: You can see what I'm reading by hopping over to http://yearofreadingmybooks.wordpress.com/

My recommendation to you would be anything by Dorothy Whipple - she's very popular with book bloggers who enjoy literature by women - not too light, not to heavy.

Thanks so much, you two!
I don't know anything about Dorothy Whipple, but I'm off to check out our excellent public library's stash of her books. Hopping right now to your post too, Ruby.
And I've got Coelho's new Aleph at the top of my TBR pile, so your response, T, has pushed me to open it tonight! (Loved Prince of Tides, too.)

I read The World We Found earlier this month. It's not too long, flows really nicely, and has some big themes of religion, wealth, power, and friendship.

Have you read The Woman in Black by Susan Hill? I read it about a month ago and it's brilliant! Only 160 pages so plenty of action and extremely well written.

If you fancy something more 'classic', have you read 'Rebecca' by Daphne du Maurier? So atmospheric and a gripping story.

Hope you find something you like! :)
