Wordless Wednesday : Uber-Nosh Edition

Rugelach. Rugelach. Rugelach.

My maiden voyage into Zabar's territory?  Crazy successful.  Dave took one bite and declared, "I could eat that whole plate."  This from a guy who's meticulous about both his diction and his consumption of anything sweet.

Why is rugelach so great?  It's not too sweet (no sugar in the dough), yet crunchy and chewy and complex in its flavors, if you do the work to make it that way.  One single rugelach will satisfy, yet you'll crave the whole batch...

You can bet this is my new best recipe, and I will be spreading the ruge-love this winter...

Wordless Wednesday: Fort Borst Edition

Dang, my dog is cute.  This was CJ's second visit to Fort Borst Park in Centralia, WA.  While we ate sandwiches, she vogued for us in hopes of scoring a tidbit.  One guess as to whether she got one.

and they're integrated beautifully with human-friendly

during our first visit.

On a hot summer's day when switching the TV on was just far too much effort, I simply sat there and stared at all this natural beauty instead. 

Now the lettuce and basil have sacrificed their beauty for our nourishment.  Better live up to their example of gorgeous self-ness and patience then!

Wordless Wednesday: Deer Harvest Edition



The few.  The proud.  The survivors.

Pretty and precious.
Yesterday cherries, blueberries, and raspberries overwhelmed our trees and bushes.  But they weren't quite ripened to perfection so we let them rest, with plans to harvest today.  Then, the deer - with their impeccable timing - came through last night and decimated almost all of everything.  Sigh.

Needless to say, this morning's chores got rearranged and 'picking the survivors, then hitting every plant with the deer spray' miraculously rose to the top of the list. 

Lesson learned.

AND:  "Rabbit!"  It's the first day of August!  (Anybody out there remember this from childhood?)
